Roger Clemens In Stands As Son Kody Makes MLB Debut

May 31, 2022 11:54 PM

\Roger Clemens has had some big baseball moments in the city of Detroit. Not many of them had him as fired up as the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader between the Detroit Tigers and Minnesota Twins.

Clemens flew into town from Texas to see his son Kody make his major league debut for the Tigers after being called up by Detroit on Monday.

A third-round pick in the 2018 amateur draft, Kody Clemens was hitting .283 at Toledo with eight homers and 31 RBIs in 45 games.

White Sox Place Dallas Keuchel On Release Waivers

May 31, 2022 8:30 AM

After designating him for assignment over the weekend, the Chicago White Sox have announced that Dallas Keuchel has been placed on unconditional release waivers.

Keuchel had logged 51 starts and 257 1/3 innings for the White Sox since the start of the 2020 season. He is still owed $14.1 million for the remainder of this season, making it unlikely he'll be claimed by another club.

If he clears waivers and is then released by the White Sox, another club would only be responsible for the prorated Major League minimum salary.

Carlos Martinez Suspended 80 Games For PED Use

May 31, 2022 8:25 AM

Carlos Martinez has been suspended 80 games by Major League Baseball after testing positive for Ibutamoren, which is in violation of Major League Baseball's Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.

Martinez, who signed a five-year contract extension with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2017, had his club option for 2022 declined after a series of rough seasons.

He signed a minor league deal with the San Francisco Giants this March, but was released in April. He landed with the Boston Red Sox, but managed just two starts for Triple-A Worcester before he was released again.

Royals Place Zack Greinke On IL With Flexor Strain

May 31, 2022 8:21 AM

The Kansas City Royals have placed Zack Greinke on the injured list with a strained right forearm.

Greinke, 38, complained of tightness in his arm following Sunday's start against the Minnesota Twins.

He is 0-4 with 5.05 ERA this season.

"Any guy who has been around as long as he has, he kind of knows what he feels and knows what most likely will work," Mike Matheny said. "We're just trying to get ahead of it right now, just looks like it's going to take a little time."

Gabe Kapler Puts Anthem Protest On Hold For Memorial Day

May 31, 2022 8:16 AM

Gabe Kapler stood when the national anthem was played before the San Francisco GIants' game against the Philadelphia Phillies on Memorial Day.

Kapler began a protest against the direction of the nation on Friday.

"Today, I'll be standing for the anthem," Kapler said Monday on his blog. "While I believe strongly in the right to protest and the importance of doing so, I also believe strongly in honoring and mourning our country's service men and women who fought and died for that right. Those who serve in our military, and especially those who have paid the ultimate price for our rights and freedoms, deserve that acknowledgment and respect, and I am honored to stand on the line today to show mine."

The manager had been avoiding the field during the national anthem as a protest after last week's school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, but he said Sunday that he was considering suspending his protest in light of Monday being Memorial Day.

"I'm very comfortable taking it day by day," Kapler said Sunday of his protest. "I think I'll just decide what makes the most sense in the moment."

Joe Girardi Not Worried About Job Security With Phillies

May 30, 2022 12:58 PM

Phillies manager Joe Girardi says he is not worried about his job security amid a losing stretch that has dropped Philadelphia 10½ games behind the New York Mets in the National League East.

The Phillies have lost 10 of their past 14 games and ended their seven-game road trip in disappointing fashion Sunday night, when they squandered a ninth-inning lead in a 5-4 walk-off loss to the rival Mets.

Royce Lewis is back in the majors with the Minnesota Twins and will be tasked with helping out at multiple positions, not just his traditional spot at shortstop.

Some Managers Support Gabe Kapler, Tony La Russa Differs

May 28, 2022 7:37 PM

White Sox manager Tony La Russa says he both likes and respects Giants manager Gabe Kapler, but disagrees with his form of protest as it relates to the latest mass shooting.

Kapler wrote this week he'll remain inside the Giants' clubhouse while the national anthem is being played before games. La Russa believes in the cause just not Kapler's actions.

"I think he's exactly right to be concerned...with what's happening in our country," La Russa said before his team hosted the Cubs on Saturday night. "He's right there. Where I disagree is the flag and the anthem are not appropriate places to try to voice your objections."
